American comic book publisher ‘Image Comics’ is home to the upcoming massive-verse, written by Kyle Higgins (Nightwing/ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers). It explores a vast universe of new superheroes and mysteries.
Higgins himself calls the story “Invincible meets Power Rangers” with the hero aspects from Power Rangers, and the seriousness tone of Invincible. Although the series grabs inspiration from existing material, it also does things that are fairly new to the comic industry which includes tie-ins with video and audio material.
With a corresponding podcast episode for every issue, the current series ‘No/One’ has become a multi-platform story. As Higgins has pointed out in different interviews, the material can be read apart from each other, but together it makes an incredible perspective.
Another recent example of the uniqueness that the Massive-Verse has to offer, can be found in the new issues of the main series ‘Radiant Black’. It tells two stories in one issue, or should I say two issues? Although it might be missed by many, Radiant Black now offers two different storylines divided over the A & B covers. The variant cover takes the meaning of ‘variant’ to a whole new level. Starting at issue 25, the issues appear to have a different ending, which will be followed up in issue 26A & B.
With a website, podcast, and controversial storytelling, this truly seems to become the new age of comics.
Were to start?
The ‘Radiant Black’ series was the start of the massive-verse, with older titles being added later on, along with a couple of spinoff series. These series include: ‘Radiant Pink’, ‘Radiant Red’, ‘Rogue Sun’, and ‘Inferno Girl Red’.
Everything came together in 2022 with the title ‘Supermassive’ which combined all characters in one book. It is here were Higgins and his team show us the massive ‘massive-verse’ they have created, and the fun that reside in building an entire universe. And even though that universe has grown quite a lot since its launch back in 2021, there still is a clear start that gives new readers an opportunity to jump in at ‘Radiant Black #1’.
