Sea of stars is a new, turn-based RPG with state-of-the-art pixel art. When I first played this game, I was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed it.
The simplistic, yet very good mechanics, the beautiful environment and the funny, well written story all hooked me into this well-crafted game. This game brought up some great memories of other fantastic turn-based RPGs and I really enjoyed every minute I spent on it.
From the vibrant character design to the fun minigames and little secrets, sea of stars is full of life and with a great story this is definitely a game to pick up.
The story
The game starts its story by introducing its main characters through a narrator, these characters: Zale and Valere are solstice warriors both controlling their own element from the sun and the moon.
Together with their childhood friend Garl they set out on a huge adventure to fight many monsters and defeat the evil fleshmancer.
On their adventure they meet many flashy characters and solve lots of puzzles.
They unlock new abilities during the adventure to use in combat and to traverse the lands.
The characters feel well written, the dialogue feels very real and keeps the story charming and funny.
The combat
The combat is turn-based and shows in how many turns the enemies will attack, this is important because if you can hit the enemies with the correct move type and elements their attack will cancel and you get a free hit on them.
Every character has its own element and weapon type, which play into different enemy weaknesses.
The combat stays interactive with giving you timing on the different moves and attacks on both offense and defense.
The combat feels nice and has a lot of similarities with other turn-based games like chained echoes. The combat feels very well designed and although there aren’t the most options, it still feels fresh with the addition of new abilities and combos.
With equipable items and badges, it stays interesting for a long time and does a lot right in my opinion.
Final verdict
Overall, Sea of stars is a very good game with a great story and rich interesting characters.
I loved all the funny one-liners and felt smart whenever I solved a puzzle or beat a dungeon.
With lots of hidden treasure and small side adventures this game will definitely keep you busy and entertained.
With beautiful environments, great combat mechanics and a lot of nostalgia for other turn-based RPGs, Sea of stars truly is a star in the sea of games.
