Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most popular and well known animated series out there. The reasons for this are quite simple: a captivating story, a wide range of interesting characters, and a world one can dream about. Therefore it is no surprise that the fandom, including me, is very excited about the upcoming animated movie and the live-action series that are in the works!
The series explained
Like a lot of others I first saw the series when I was pretty young. Since then I have watched it multiple times and every time it feels like it grows with me as I find new details to love. Due to its rewatchability and the more grown up parts in the story you miss when you’re young, it maintains relevancy. The premise of a chosen kid with a rag-tag team fighting evil is quite simple, but the internal struggles with all of them is what makes it an amazing adventure. The redemption and the downfall of characters and the heart wrenching backstories is what makes it so sad-isfying to watch. The world itself is also beautiful, with its unique nature and interesting animals. That includes the four elements which are a basic principle but are expanded on significantly, in both good and terrifying ways.
Dive into the fandom
The fandom of this animation is big and can be found all over the internet consisting mostly of art, memes and cosplay. And because all the main characters and a lot of side-characters are very well liked – the drawings, videos, cosplay or any other creative outlet is pretty diverse. The fandom itself is for the most part positive about the content, although there are some big dislikes like the live action movie, and some smaller debates on some “filler” episodes and the sequel Korra. Currently the fandom is very hyped about the upcoming movie about the adult “gaang”, referring to the main cast. For the live action series we are trying to keep our expectations low, reminding ourselves of the previous disaster. Furthermore the original writers left the production because of creative disagreement creating unrest over the quality.
More than just a series
Besides all the television content, there are additional comics that continue the series. They give more stories, and character development, and answer questions you get after watching the series. The comics really feel like a proper continuation and deserve a read!
All by all Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to amaze, and we’re all exited what the future of this franchise will be. If you have the time go (re)watch the series before the new content drops in the near future, and escape to this wonderful world of imagination.
